There is a fascinating darkness to Voodoo Heart, a collection of short stories from acclaimed up-and-coming author Scott Snyder. Each tale revolves around an oddball character – some peculiarly deranged, others deeply and engagingly disturbed – and their development even in limited page count makes this book difficult to put down.
Among the best stories in Voodoo Heart are “Dumpster Tuesday” and the title story, both starring characters struggling to survive and hold on to their relationships despite overwhelming self-destructive natures. “Wreck” is another highlight of the collection, exploring the less-than fascinating regular Joe in a celebrity relationship.
These are not bloody tales designed to feed you nightmares, but rather they are deep psychological thrillers rooted in the strength of Snyder’s character development – dark, funny, imaginative, and always disturbing. Notwithstanding, Snyder’s whimsical writing style underscores the remarkable talent of this young and strikingly original writer.
